OS Upgrade MIDI Device

it seems i'll have to get another midi device to do an os upgrade as i am using one of those $5 jointz from ebay with the silver wires and noticed a few others here have also not been able to upgrade with this cable
then i did a google search and found this link. so it seems the cable is the problem, but there is no mention of an affordable alternative. i would like to find a decent usb/midi cable instead of a midi interface if i could. has anyone upgraded their os with a usb/midi cable or will i need a dedicated midi interface?
