Q: where'd the 'beats' go?

Q: where'd the 'beats' go?

2002-08-06 by zensufikabala

I was playing with a mp-7 last weekend and noticed that 'beats'
weren't one of the categories of preset. I assume 'beats' are
somehow subsumed into the 16 track patterns on the box. I would
expect that there should be a 1-1 mapping (more or less) of
the 'patterns' on the mp-7 to the beats on the mo'phatt. Is this
true? I've looked at the listing of beats on the mo'phatt, the pure
phatt rom, and the patterns on the mp-7 and they seem to have more or
less the same names.

So, what happens to the beats from the different roms I would add to
a mp-7? Do they just become more patterns on the mp-7? I was hoping
to be able to mix tracks from the Beat Garden and World Expedition
roms' beats with tracks from the native mp-7 patterns. Anyway to do
this, short of syncing an Orbit3 and Planet Earth with a mp-7?
Thanks for any responses.

The beats are actually completely seperate from the sequencer, and they
would need to have OS ver 1.31 installed too. If you want to play with
beats, press Preset below the display, then scroll through the presets
until you get to some with the "bts" preset. Again, unless they've got a
machine on the floor with the latest OS, the MP7 won't have any beats in
it.

A salesman told me that the beats on the sound roms were not
identical to the beats found on the sound modules or the command
stations. Is this true? How about the new keyboards?

Central question: Is there a difference between the 16 channel/track
beats/patterns found on the: modules (xl-1 & mo'phatt), mp/xl-7,
sound roms, and mk/xk-6?

Soon after finding no beats on the command stations I tried out the
new keyboards. (If I could get the same 'functionality' out of a
$599 keyboard as I could a $950 command station, then great.) Again,
somewhat different behavior from both the sound modules and the
command stations! That is, I could use 'beats', but they didn't seem
to sync as seemlessly as riffs and patterns on the command stations?
(Maybe I didn't take enough time to get sync as I had to leave too
soon.)

We seem to have a four way split in how the same synth data is
handled! I assume the new OS addresses this to some degree. Does it
bridge the differences?

Then, OS 1.31 will allow use of beats off of any sound rom in the catalog?

>>>As long as those Sound Roms have beats Presets on them, then yes. <<<

A salesman told me that the beats on the sound roms were not identical to
the beats found on the sound modules or the command stations. Is this
true? How about the new keyboards?

>>>Don't know, Emu? <<<

Central question: Is there a difference between the 16 channel/track
beats/patterns found on the: modules (xl-1 & mo'phatt), mp/xl-7, sound
roms, and mk/xk-6?

>>>Personally I think you're putting too much stake in beats mode, it's
fun for about 5 minutes :) <<<

We seem to have a four way split in how the same synth data is handled! I
assume the new OS addresses this to some degree. Does it bridge the
differences?

>>>What differences are you talking about? All of the newer Emu gear
shares the same Sound Roms, so there's really not much difference other
than the physical casings for the most part. The keyboards only have 64
poly, while the XX-7's have 128 poly. Othe differences? <<<
