Does anyone have experience playing and stopping patterns in the XL-7
from an outside controller, like a keyboard. How did you set it up?

You don't :<

There aren't any midi controls for the 16 pattern buttons.

How about starting and stopping a pattern or song with the
footswitches? It's hard to believe that there are no midi controls
to stop and start patterns or songs.

I don't think that was the question (the 16 buttons are for *muting* or
stopping particular tracks, not the whole pattern itself). The XL7 can
recognize midi start and stop. The next question is whether you can map a
midi note number to start and stop. Maybe not, but some sequencer's allow
that.

Hi,

the only way to play patterns by a keyboard is to use touch tracks in Logic,
but not by XL-7

Yeah, that would be hard to believe. That's why there is... =)

Song start (0xFA), song stop (0xFC), song continue (0xFB), and song
position pointer (0xF2) are all supported. Most software sequencers
have the option to transmit these commands along with MIDI clock.
Many keyboards have this functionality too. If you have 2 XL-7's,
you can even slave one to the other.

PS. you will need recent software though; available on the web...
