OT: Question about Emu Samplers

OT: Question about Emu Samplers

2002-10-09 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

Ok, been really, really itching to start playing out live again (and had a
lot of requests to do so from various promotors), and I'm running out of
solutions on the best way to get my songs from the computer to the stage
in the most flexible way possible. I've been hoping against hope that the
XX-7's would support direct sample Rom burning, but I can't wait much
longer. And truth be told, even if they could do that, the largest ROM
available is only 32MB, which is probably not enough for me to load up a
sets worth of 8 measure loops. Not to mention it's insane price. So, I
think the only way to go as of now will be to bite the bullet and get an
Emu sampler for live use (damn you Emu, you win again! :) ). Hopefully
I'd be doing this at the beginning of next month too, so not a whole lot
of time to research.

Anyone out there with an Emu sampler care to field a few questions?

1. The best buy right now looks to be the E5000, anyone seen any other
good deals? I only need 64 voices, so the 128 thing isn't too a big a
deal to me.

2. I need to make all of this controllable, right from the XL-7 ideally. I
wan to power up the sampler, laod my samples and forget about it. I was
thinking of setting up each track mute button to toggle a loop on or off
in the sampler. Is there an easy way to do this? I'd mute and unmute
loops in the middle of playback sometimes, so it's not as easy to
configure as it sounds. Anyone working this way?

3. Anyone other things I should keep in mind about this set up? I still
want to use some patterns with internal sounds, and some with external
ones, easy to do? Issues?

If you need a full blown sampler (which it sounds like you do), would your choice to go with E-mu be so that there is a better interface functionally with the XL7 being that it is E-mu too? (or is it so you can burn your own samples too?)

I have a Yamaha A5000 that I have not used very much (not because there is anything wrong with it, but because, like you may, I bought it for live use to bring things out of the studio and computer) but have not had the need for it live yet since i haven't done much live in about 6 months).

I am assuming however that I should be able to control it just fine from the XL7. Am I wrong?

More input from members please!

In regard to your question 2: it seems to me that it would be easier to just map a latched sample to a few keys in a high or low register and just use the transpose switch to move the pads to the control octave and turn the samples on and off right from the pads-- a la beats mode sort of--even if you use other ranges of pads to do other things. Why not do it that way? If you are looking just to MUTE samples while they are running rather than stop and restart them, then perhaps the mute buttons would work (if you are not useing them for other things) or better yet you use the knobs on the xL7 as a midi volume mixer for the midi tracks running your samples ( you can have each sample run on its own midi channel, etc).

If you need a full blown sampler (which it sounds like you do), would your
choice to go with E-mu be so that there is a better interface functionally
with the XL7 being that it is E-mu too? (or is it so you can burn your own
samples too?)

>>>Yeah, to keep some sort of compatibility between the two, possibly burn
roms too. Plus, I'm addicted to the patchcord modulation matrix. <<

I have a Yamaha A5000 that I have not used very much (not because there is
anything wrong with it, but because, like you may, I bought it for live
use to bring things out of the studio and computer) but have not had the
need for it live yet since i haven't done much live in about 6 months).

>>>That's a nice sampler, I almost got one fo those a couple years ago.
<<<

In regard to your question 2: it seems to me that it would be easier to
just map a latched sample to a few keys in a high or low register and just
use the transpose switch to move the pads to the control octave and turn
the samples on and off right from the pads-- a la beats mode sort of--even
if you use other ranges of pads to do other things. Why not do it that
way?

>>>Very interesting idea Ravi! The only reason I WOULDN'T do it that way,
would be to retain some sense of what is what when muting and unmuting
patterns that do and don't use samples. Ummm, what I mean is, I know that
mute button 1 is always my BD, button 2 is always the snare, etc. I'd
like to not have to worry about it if my next pattern is sample based or
using the internal sound engine. MIght not be possible, I agree. Best
case scenario is to laod up the sampler, and just not look at it for the
rest of the gig.

Oh yeah, and if I use the latching idea, my timing needs to be flawless in
order to retrigger the samples, still an idea to think about for sure! <<<

If you are looking just to MUTE samples while they are running rather than
stop and restart them, then perhaps the mute buttons would work (if you
are not useing them for other things) or better yet you use the knobs on
the xL7 as a midi volume mixer for the midi tracks running your samples (
you can have each sample run on its own midi channel, etc).

>>>Another good idea! <<<
