More OS ideas

More OS ideas

More stuff I thought of:

- A way to specify what the note lengths will be in grid mode. They are
far too short IMO, a lot of the good drums sounds never get to play their
full length. If I shift duration of my drum track notes after the fact,
they sound ten times more full and natural.

- Speaking of shifting duration, I wish they'd up the ppq resolution to
480 too. Two reasons, one is that SX is set at 480, and fine editing done
there doesn't always work when you retransfer midi files back into the
XL-7. Granted this doesn't affect everyone obviously, but SX is one the
two biggies on the PC side now. The second reason is that it's so much
easier to think of note divisions when you're dealing with 480, since it's
easily devisable in your head. 384 is a pain to think through when it
comes to guessing what a 16th or 32nd is, especially after too many beers.
Do it for us drinkers! :)

If only you knew the headaches that that has given me! I do most of my
sequenceing on friday evenings, usually running on 20+ hours without
sleep...gets to be a REAL pain trying to do the math quickly without ruining
the mood...

After a few days with my XL-7, I feel a little disappointed by the
lack of more sophisticated editing functions on the sequencer (swap
tracks is sadly missed at the moment - cool to solve timing problem
by exchanging low and high priority tracks).

Basically what I have in mind (and hopefully I'm not the only one :)
would be to have something similar to my Roland XP50 sequencer (my
only reference when it comes to hardware seq - sorry):
for each 13 Types of function (ERASE, DELETE, COPY w/MIX or REPLACE,
INSERT, TRSNPOS, CHANGE VEL/CHN/GATE, MERGE, EXTRACT, SHIFT, THIN,
XCHANGE), you can mostly choose which track/pattern it will be applied
to (or ALL), the BAR RANGE, the CHANNEL or type of EVENT to be
affected if relevant, and the NOTE RANGE. Not to mention Type specific
parameters (VEL RANGE for instance). And that's very cool. Very similar
to Cubase "logical editor" and much faster.

Don't get me wrong: I find the XL-7 OS to have some *really* clever
programming inside, a very very nice interface ans synth engine,
mostly great sounds and drums, but it still lacks a lot in the sequencer
edit functions department IMHO, so far. Or maybe am I too much of a
Roland centric (after all these years) to get my way over another unit,
and that's why I'm stumbling all the time. :)

I want Drumkits and more sensible effect routing either (like the Roland
- again), but I'm afraid it won't happen anytime soon.

I ended up making a little chart I can refer to, gives me all the note
divsions in terms of ppqn. It was a necessity for the contest tune I'm
doing!
