Along similar lines, I have both the xl7 with the Vintage Keys ROM
installed and the Emu ESI-32 sampler. One of the CD's I got for the
ESI is a Emu Vintage Keys collection which duplicates a lot of what's
on the ROM. And considering that a CD is 650MB and a ROM is 128MB,
it's no surprise that the sounds on the CD are clearly superior to
the ROM. The Mellotron string sample is 30MB alone, and it really
shows. I just checked ebay and ESI's are going for $177. Now, you'll
probably have to throw in some kind of SCSI mass storage (hard drive,
iomega) and a SCSI CDROM, but if really sounds fabulous and I've
found the ESI reliable and very easy to use.
That being said, the Vintage Keys ROM is a hoot. The old string
machines (Elka, Solina) and the analog basses are worth the price of
admission. If you don't want to mess with separate boxes, it's a
great little chip.
Hope that helps.
