How things cRack Production Notes

2003-01-27 by David

So one day, about 4 months ago, I was walking to the bus stop from work...
As I walked I got this melody in my head. I was humming it and stuff and
thinking to my self "damn this rocks" - making variations for it and such,
as well as thinking up various drum lines. I was worried that I would
forget it, so I kept humming it to myself at the bus stop and on the bus all
the way home (45 minute ride) -

When I got home, the first think I did is put it down. I just used the most
plane sound there was. from there I built a primary pattern. I thought it
would be cool to utilize triplets in the rhythm... kinda gave it a bouncy
feeling. from there I went through many variations. my main pattern that I
worked with included triplet drum pattern, the bass line, the keys, and
strings... It took up 14 track slots. . . My first song mix got messed up
quite a bit in the run because if me working on other tracks and messing up
presets (how annoying) While trying to fix the first version I accidently
deleted the WHOLE thing. . . DOH! -- My tracks always seem to sound
better the second time around anyway.

At first the track was pretty bland and repeditive. . . I added quite a
few breaks in there and expanded on the main theme with some delays... At
about 2:57 a strange breakdown shows up. I really don't remember what drug
I was on at the time, but it turned out really nice. I really dig the
filters in the drums. It's amazing what you can do with this box. The
majority of the sounds I used were either "reshaped presets" of "from
scratch" - the drums are actually a combo of a couple different kits.

I am working on a final mix for this track, as it needs a lot in my humble
opinion. The levels aren't all perfect, and the drums do sound better with
a slight touch of compression. Of course my damn midi cable fried out so
I'm going to go have to purchase a new one. Question is USB or Game port?
I'm outa USB ports, so I think I'll go ol'skool (I still think it would be
cool if eloader 2.0 dubbed as a midi port :P)

I"ll be sure to let you know when it's done. And congrats to REALM for
being an AWESOME producer!

peace
