My tracks are usually between 130 and 171 bpm. I used to be a drummer,
which helps a lot, but it's just a matter of putting what you want in your
head and just doing it. Usually I have to slow my track down to 50% before
recording it. listen to the drums you have and find a place for them in
your break... Also filters have a lot to do with great sounding drums.
My best drum lines are usually done on 1 track because I can control the
whole "kit" - Don't be affraid to build your own kits - the XX-7 can layer 4
sounds per preset and you can stak 4 presets at a time. so you can put that
special kick with that phat tom and that punchy snare... The ERASE button
is a saviour too - "which drum in the break just doesn't go well" and erase
it -

To answer your question more fully, I usually start by recording a 2 or 4
measure loop in real mode (slow) then add different things in grid mode.
Then I extend that pattern to 8 or 16 measures and move things around. Take
that snare drum and put it on the 1/8th note instead of the 1/4 note, mix
the hats around a little... Never be afraid to try something new ...
There's always REVERT...

Ok, just because I have the day off, doesn't mean I can sit in this forum
and write messages all day... back to the purple box.
