"Rotary encoders

I've had an issue with my encoders, but a quick shot of contact cleaner and they have been 
like new ever since. AND they are open pots so it was super easy. It took me all of five 
minutes to get mine like new again.

1) Depending on their age, the plastic used in them may crack when exposed to certain 
solvents as found in some contact cleaners. A lot of people say to avoid them but I haven't 
had much trouble with cleaners such as Chemtronics CZ Pow-R-Wash:

2) One of the lemon-based cleaners sounds less likely to cause damage than others based 
on synthetic organic chemicals. Watch it doesn't gum up – make ure you wash residue 
away with something like propan-1-ol (isopropanol, isopropyl alcohol.

3) Careful cleaning with a soft synthetic rubber pencil eraser on the metal contacts can 
often help.

4) Similarly, careful lubrication/cleaning with the graphite end of the pencil can help

5) You *may* be able to cannibalise a modern encoder body and mount the original 
shaft/knob/panel-mounting assembly on it

I have repaired pots and switches in the past using these sorts of methods and had fair 
results, but of course you might find that they fail after a few months/years and need 
doing again."
