a question regarding self triggering, envelopes, and so forth

2006-11-27 by sebsi23

hi, this is my first post:

i'm getting more into using my xpander without midi, and triggering envelopes via LFOs
and so forth. i've found that in single mode, each voice seems to trigger and receive
modulation differently. for example, let's say i've got a patch that has the VCAs in the filter
turned all the way up, so the oscillators are basically droning without any triggering. if i
apply, for example, pitch modulation from an LFO, each voice is modulated at different
times, which is a neat effect but not what i always want. in other words, if all i want is a
steady "police siren" type sound (triangle LFO modulating pitch), i get six different voices
doing six different things. i want each voice to be modulated by the same waveform at the
same frequency with the same waveform starting point. normally, you would achieve this
by setting the LFO to retrig with a MIDI key stroke, but i don't want to use midi. i know i
can also use VIB as a global LFO for all voices, but that's no fun: it's not modulatable by
other modulators, etc. and, i'd like to be able to use the tracking gens this way, or
envelopes, but everything pretty much acts on its own.

any ideas? you can try this yourself by first unplugging your midi cable (assuming its
plugged in!) and then turning on your xpander. this ensures that you're not triggering any
modulation sources. take just about any basic patch and turn up the VCAs in the VCF until
you get a drone. turn down OSC 2, and add LFO modulation to OSC 1 appropriate for a
simple police siren type sound. if you're like me, you'll find that the LFO modulates each
voice at the same frequency but at different onset times. try to add an envelope that's
being triggered by an LFO; same thing: each voice gets modulated rather randomly. i
understand that it's six different
LFOs, six voices, etc, and that i probably should be happy that i'm able to do that, but
what if i'd like to trigger each of the 6 LFOs at the same time so each voice is being
modulated equally? ideas? after digging around i'm pretty sure that without midi triggers,
the LFOs, ENVs, etc., will run independently of each other and therefore cannot be synced.

thanks,
