Xpander/M-12 voice volume variations

Xpander/M-12 voice volume variations

2018-08-28 by mattvrazo@...

Hi all, curious if anyone has come across an issue where individual voice volumes on their xpander/M-12 are not the same? On my M-12, I have one voice in particular that is about 1dB quieter than the rest. It's not really noticeable in use, but was also just noticeable enough for me to become aware of it.

I should note that all of the voices are slightly different volumes when you actually start measuring them, but most are so close as to be a non-issue. If anything, it seems like one voice board (1-6) is slightly quieter than the other, but it passes on the VCA calibration (and everything else) so I'm wondering if it's maybe a parts tolerance thing that just hasn't gone out enough yet to cause the calibration to fail. I probably won't try and "fix" it for now, but it would be good to know in advance what the culprit might be. I.e., is this happening at the board level, or the voice level?

Could it simply be the panning? did you try putting all voices in the centre?

Not sure what you could do but if you know which voices are playing up you could try the following.

find a good and a bad voice.
  1. turn the rest off so you only have a 2 voice poly..
  2. then swap the socketed chips over on a good voice with the bad voice (maybe one of the ones that is turned off) until you can isolate the chip that is playing up..
3. Use the good voice as a way to monitor what the required levels are
I recently fixed my Oberheim Matrix 12 by doing exactly this and isolated the exact chip (an op amp in my case). I also fixed some other things while I was at it..

Top board should be voices 1-6, bottom board 7-12. However, I have found that the boards retain their voice allocation regardless of if they are at the bottom or top.

No, definitely not panning related (all are in middle).
