Need help to test a used Xpander

Need help to test a used Xpander

2008-04-04 by n333k0

Hi, everybody, i joined this board time ago, but never really had an
xpander, now i've found one used and i need some help from you!
Do you have any advice on how to make sure the one i'm going to buy is
not faulty or has some issue?

Thankyou in advance, and have a good day !

Nicola

Hi,

Just execute the tests on page 33 of the Oberheim Xpander Service Manual.

When you have got an Xpander (or, why not earlier), it is a very good idea to buy a few of
the following components, at least:

- Display FG405B2-9DM or FG405A2 (Itron, Noritake)
- CEM3372 VCF
- CEM3374 dual VCO

Both CEM3374 and especially the displays may be impossible to find, as you will soon
realize, however.

PLEASE, ANYBODY, if you have got extra CEM3374's or Xpander Displays, let us know!

Tricky one this.

The ideal solution is to take someone along with you who has used one and knows how a
non faulty Xpander behaves. You may not be able to do that.

If it was me, I would do the following:

Download the Xpander operating manual off the web. Read it before you go so that you
have some idea of how to access all the parameters.

Learn how to tune the Xpander - this should be the first thing you do when you get there.
Press the Tune button and tune 'all' - these should all 'pass'.

Plug in all three outputs if you can to make sure they all work (you must learn how to pan
the output from the manual) If the Xpander has all its outs connected up, so much the
better.

Check all the LCD displays - are they working? Do they show you what you would expect?

Remember the Xpander is quite an old lady now, so you can expect her to make quite a
loud hum when she is on compared to modern equipment.

That's a start - no doubt others on this forum will have more tips. Remember it is more
likely than not to work fine.

Good luck!

Thank you,
i'm just writing a list of tests in italian for the seller, he lives
about 400 km so maybe it's better he looks if its all right before i
travel 4 hour to find out myself!
Any other opinion is much appreciated.

Nicola
