Xpander tuning

2008-08-08 by eggwheatis

Ok so my xpander fails on first tune of the VCO's and filter, usually
pressing tune for a second or sometime third time eventually get's it
to pass. it dont actually hear any major tuning problems but..

What's the procedure to make the tuning pass first time?

Phil.

Sometimes I press the "tune all" button and it passes the 1st osc only, pressing the button again a bit heavier passes the whole process flawlessly.
IMO, it´s the soft button for "tune all" ( upper row/right), - just mechanical or dust ...

Also no real issues w/ my Xpander her,- tuning is very stable after warm up.

Your case might be more complex because the tuning process passes all the osc and then fails w/ the filters.
This can be the beginning of a CEM chip dies.

Find out which voice fails during filter tuning, swap the CEM3372 chips and see if it happens w/ a different voice now.
If yes replace that chip.
You get the chip @ chip for brains (ebay) and/ or vintage planet.nl and they aren´t as expensive as other CEMs ( 3340 /60 p.ex.).
I got mine for EUR 15.- or 17.- AFAIR.
If you replaced a chip and this voice sounds a bit different then, the behaviour of the voice can be trimmed inside the Xpander.
But you can also try to get 6 CEM 3372 as a matched kit which is not difficult for these type of chip.
