It's okay. I don't either. I don't even own any CZ's anymore, unless
I didn't fish them all out of the sock drawer.

>Should I post a few of my favorite CZ and SQ patches?

Not only that, Edwin, but you've just become the involuntary keeper of
the CZ patches. You can have the honor of sorting out the duplicates
below and forwarding them to anyone else who ever asks again.

One request: please don't try any of mine -- I did them three years
ago, they're probably pretty lame. :-?

Since a bunch of people asked for them, here they are...
These have mostly seen this group before; but there's been a lot
of redundancy taken out...

[I hope files >65k don't still break things...]

Comments: I put the three different versions (different detune octave
settings) on adjacent Internal memory keys , and by switching back
and forth between beats (it takes practice) I got a "drum kit", and
even gated off some of the hits by switching to the next sound before
the note had died out. Primitive, but it got on the local college
station a few times. This is one of those sounds that sounds really
big on tape.

Comments: Everybody likes this one, but you have to play it a certain
way or it sounds stupid. Turn your reverb WAY up and playing three
or four octaves in unison, tap short horn-punch chords.

Ha ha ha, five people have mistaken it for a Fairlight on tape so
far!

Comments: Take the "Internal #3" setting and change DCO1 to
	2 0	for pan pipes
	7 0	for Dangersound

"Dangersound" on the low D note is something like Ministry
opened their show with last time I saw them. Excuse me for making fun
of those Casio Sound Data book names like "Dangerous Sound #2".

* Use it at the extreme low end for a fat slightly distorted deep organy

Comments: This sounds kind of like the laser fire in a cheap video game.
To change the number of shots fired each time you push a key,
change the rate of DCA 1, STEP 5.
To vary the speed at which shots are fired, vary the vibrato
rate (most effective if you do this while playing.)

Comments: This sound creates a "high-to-low" filter sweep in discrete increments
(hence, glissando) each time a key is pressed. The sweep is most noticable
in the lower range of the keyboard. For really gothic song intros,
try setting DETUNE OCTAVE to -1 and playing single notes going slowly
>from high to low on the keyboard.
(Notice that the parameter values of this sound are very similar
to those of Space Shots. By tweaking the vibrato, DCO1, DCA1
it becomes a semi-musical sound.)

An ethereal third harmonic fades in as the fundamental fades out.
Play slowly & hold down the keys for several seconds for full effect.
Reminiscent of some of the music in the film _Diva_.

The best sound comes from keys at the low end of the keyboard, I think.
Hold down the key to let the effect complete its cycle.
Holding several adjacent keys works well, too.

Similar to the plucked bass sound used on several Thompson Twins records.
After an initial transient, the note fades to a muted drone.

Comments: "Choral oooh" was a semi-successful experiment to see if
something close to vocals could be obtained. As you CZ
owners know, the "human voice" preset sounds ok, but not
at all like a human voice. "Choral oooh" sounds something
like a person singing "oooh" (long u sound). It is not
perfect, but I think you will find it outclasses the human
voice preset by far. This voice sounds best when you play
major chords on the middle-high octave range. Try playing
           with the line select, too.

Comments: "Reverb Strings" is a modification of the preset "Synth
Strings". The "reverb" comes from playing the note not
only when a key is pressed, but also when the key is
released. Try holding a chord and then letting off the
keys one at a time, and you will hear the effect. With
a little practice on the timing of pressing and releasing
the keys, you can get some interesting effects such as
eight eighth notes when only when four eighth notes
separated by eighth rests are played.

Comments: Sound depends on what octave you play at. Very nice ringy metallic
sounds; the piano in particular is *perfect*.
Then plug in distortion [I'm using an Arion Metal Master] and get
twisted wicked sounds with intense feedback sustain. Twiddle the
pitch-bend knob and be your own Jimi Hendrix or Thurston Moore!

"'Nightporter' was programmed (surprise, surprise) in an
attempt to recreate the mood of the Satie-influenced Japan song of the
same name. If the sound comes across too sweet for your taste, reduce
the Fine Detune to around 09 for a more piano-like sound. Some slow
modulation delayed to the tail-end of the sound adds a different
dimension, too." -_MT_

Note: I didn't write down the octave setting, but when set up
correctly there will be this surprise "clank" somewhere in the second
octave of the keyboard, and a more electronic-drum-like bash on the
low C. Reuben had this timed to go with the snare on his TR-707, and
the resulting clank sounded like a Depeche Mode sample. In fact, I
*thought* he was doing this on his Prophet 2000, it sounded so good.

Here are two patches I made for the casio cz. The first one evolved
from Casio's cello (and so sounds sort of slowly bowed), the second
was originally an attempt to make a plucked version of the first (but
doesn't sound all that much like that). I like to split the
keyboard between them.

Okay, here are two patches for my fellow CZ owners.

The first, called BRASS!, was developed by myself shortly after I got
my synth. I wanted a euphonium and ended up with a very fat brassy sound.

The second, Steinway, is a pretty good piano patch I picked up from
a friend of mine. No, it won't fool anyone, but it works for me...

We need GOOD patches. Here are a couple of contributions.
(Are they GOOD? Well, I like them.)

Here is one for the ESQ'1. This is a wire-strung celtic harp.
It layers nicely with the HARP patch for the CZ-101, below

comment: I built this one after a celtic harp concert.
         (Patrick Ball, September, 1987)

I subsequently purchased a cassette of Mr. Ball, playing his harp.

>From the album notes:
The uniquely clear and resonant sound of the traditional wire-strung
Celtic folk harp has been heard only rarely since its playing became a
lost art nearly two centuries ago. An ancient instrument, it is
played with the fingernails and demands far greater playing skill than
the more familiar "neo-irish" harp with its softer gut or nylon
strings. The instrument featured on this album is an outstanding
modern re-creation by the master harp builder Jay Witcher.

The synthesized sound described here is subjectively
(to me) close to the sound of the harp on the album.

__________________________________________________________________

Here it is - one of my favorite sounds for the CZ-101.

Tone name: HARP
line select: 1
detune: + 0 0 0 (+/-, octave, note, fine)
vibrato: 1 0 0 0 (wave, delay, rate, depth)
octave: 0
dco1 wave: 2 0
dco1 env: 50/0/e (rate/level{/sustain|end})*
dcw1 keyfollow: 9
dcw1 env: 99/99, 50/0/e
dca1 keyfollow: 9
dca1 env: 90/99, 20/0/e

comment: gut or nylon harp, pluck envelope on dcw/dca

This is a reasonable approximation of a gut-strung or nylon-
strung harp. It is done on dcx1, only, so it is
octophonic - I find this valuable because of the longish
sustain (from 99 to 0 @ 20.)

I have done a couple other interesting sounds for these instruments
(ESQ'1 and CZ-101,) and I might share them, too, if there is expressed
interest sufficient to overcome my inertia.

I seem to recall seeing a few postings for Casio CZ patches on this net,
so I will assume that there is at least _some_ audience for these patches.
Here are a few of my own, which I think some of you might enjoy:

----------------------
"Space" (Couldn't think of a better name. Can you?)

Line Select: 1 + 1'
Modulation: None
Detune: (+) Oct: 00
  Note: 00 Fine: 07

              33 00 (E)

This one also works well with line select set to 1, which gives you 8 voice
polyphony.

(If you want 8 voice polyphonic, use Line Select 2, but this is not nearly
as good as the whole thing.)

If anyone else has patches, I would love to try them out! I would also like
to hear your comments.

As the estimable G Taylor points out, the playing technique is what
makes or breaks any synthesis.

I have spent some time fiddling with FM "equivalents" to
authentic Javanese instruments, and have decided it's fruitless.

Nonetheless, here are a few patches which are not terribly far
off.

Note that I've left lots of parameters blank. These are the "fine-tuning".

Most of the bar instruments can be approximated using additive synthesis.
On a DX7 (6-op) instrument choose algorithm 32. On a 4-op instrument,
choose algorithm 8. In any case, the first six frequency ratios should be,
roughly, 1.00, 2.76, 5.40, 8.94, 13.36, 18.60. Make decaying envelopes and
mess with the output levels and keyboard scalings.

And listen. Listen to what you've made. Then listen to the world.
Then listen to what you've made. Et cetera.

Pianos!

Well, these don't REALLY sound like pianos, but they are nice sounds, and
closer than any other cz patches I've heard (which isn't saying a whole
lot...). And since they're simple, you also get twice as many notes!

Hello! Just thought I would post a couple interesting
patches I made for the Casio CZ-series. I have a CZ-5000

Fellow Casio-holics,

Pardons to all for posting this to the net, but I've been trying to
contact Paul B for some time now with no luck. Anyway, here're some more
CZ patches for all of you patch hoards to glom.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Paul B,

Here are a couple of my patches. They're probably not
the greatest in the world but they've been useful in various
contexts. (I tend to use an SPX-90 *a lot*, so the sounds might
loose translation w/out the effect.) Let me know what you think.

In addition to your new patches, I'm still waiting on your previous
batch of patches from some 4+ months ago. I thought I was on your
mailing list for those (..at least you told me I was...). If I
could get those too I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

Comments:
This sounds kind of like the laser fire in a cheap video game.
To change the number of shots fired each time you push a key,
change the rate of DCA 1, STEP 5.
To vary the speed at which shots are fired, vary the vibrato
rate (most effective if you do this while playing.)

Comments:
This sound creates a "high-to-low" filter sweep in discrete increments
(hence, glissando) each time a key is pressed. The sweep is most noticable
in the lower range of the keyboard. For really gothic song intros,
try setting DETUNE OCTAVE to -1 and playing single notes going slowly
from high to low on the keyboard.
(Notice that the parameter values of this sound are very similar
to those of Space Shots. By tweaking the vibrato, DCO1, DCA1
it becomes a semi-musical sound.)

Here's 6 patches for Casio CZ's. You'll probably want to replace the
lame names with something more dignified. Also note that some of
the patches include a "parent patch" in the comments section.

Comments: I called this "Wild Kingdom" because it's sounds like a
nature TV show patch. The patch is based on CZ-101 patch #1 (Brass
ens. 1). The slow vibrato is critical for this patch.

Comments: Strictly for special effects. High notes sound like a ray
gun (don't ask what kind of ray); low notes sound like a helicopter.
Based on CZ-101 patch #7 (flute) -- which explains the gratuitous
detail in the DCA's.

Comments: I was trying to emulate the big crashes on "In the Air
Tonight" and "I Don't Care Anymore". Having heard it on CD last
week, there's no comparison. However, SOMEONE on the net (I lost the
message) claims to have improved it. ???

Comments: Everybody likes this one, but you have to play it a certain
way or it sounds stupid. Turn your reverb WAY up and playing three
or four octaves in unison, tap short horn-punch chords.

Ha ha ha, five people have mistaken it for a Fairlight on tape so
far!

OK, Paul, here is a new patch. I just bought an EZ-CZ memory
cartridge for my Casio - the $50 model that is supposed to be
blank. My copy had about 16 patches in it, including one
that was reminiscent of drilling. After making some changes
I came up with this:

Name: Drilling

Hei Paul!!! (Norwegian)

Please mail those new patches to me.
Thanks.
Q: Have you got any other responses from Norway?

Here is a patch edited from a piano-like sound recived earlier. Maybe useful.
(I like it.)

I read your offer of "FREE!" CZ-101 patches on the net a few
days ago, and I offer the following three in return. My favorite
is the "Reverb Flute" from E&MM, while the other two are
originals. "Guitar with distortion" really is an unplayable patch,
but it has 'built-in' distortion, so may come in handy as a guide
as to how to do this. The "Mean Electric Guitar" is a cross
between a motor bike at 800000 rpm and a guitar - it needs work,
but with the right outboard signal processors it could become a
good heavy metal guitar (I've used it occasionally for such).

By the way, do you know of any people with a TR-707 or Jx8p?
I would like to trade patches, or sequences for them.

I'll trade the following original CZ patch for your latest set of patches
(sounds like an even trade to me!). I hope I transcribed it properly.

Subject: New CZ patch set

Hi--

I'm interested in getting a copy of your new patch set.
Here's your patch. This patch is not original with me; it was
developed by a guy named Mark Schmeider here at DEC.
There was a harpsichord #1 but this one's better.

I'm at
   ever11%wake.dec@decwrl.dec.com

Thanks in advance,
      Bill Wake

Subject: CZ patches

Hello Paul --

You say you have some patches to swap, eh? Well, I just
recently purchased a CZ-101, so I don't have much. I only
have two. Now don't laugh when you see what they are; they
were for a project I was doing for someone. Enclosed are
two "bird call" patches. (I had used a DX-100 wind chime
patch plus an old PAIA wind generator to make an environmental
ambiance.)

I would appreciate leads to other patches as well. If I
develop any, I'll send you a copy, if you're interested.

One other thing, before I move on to the patches themselves:
I am a member of the Computers and Music Group of the Boston
Computer Society. My mind went on a bit of a journey and
thought about the possibility of collecting patches (beg, borrow
and steal among everyone) and if there is an interest, to possibly
bind them into a book. The whole idea, though is the free exchange
of patches and programming hints and techniques. Do you have any
comments? Are you interested?

...

OK, Paul, sounds like a good offer. Here are 3 patches... The best synth bass
I've come up with, the best synth drums I've come up with, and a "bell organ,"
whatever that is. Anxiously awaiting your patches...

  - Tom

PS... I sent you mail last year about the patches you were sending out via
US mail... I got a response from you, but no patches... Still available?

Paul,
I'd sure like to get a copy of your CZ patches, so here's one that
I use often. I didn't come up with it from scratch; it's a sight modification
of one of the existing patches, I don't remember which one.

* Use it at the extreme low end for a fat slightly distorted deep organy
sound. I don't know how else to explain it.

Subject: CZ sounds

Paul,

(I've been trying to get this to you for awhile now. uucp keeps coughing
it back up in my face. Please let me know if you get it.)

Paul:

Here are some of my patches for your CZ exchange. I'd appreciate seeing as
many patches as you're willing to send.

=========
Name: Diva Harmonic
An ethereal third harmonic fades in as the fundamental fades out.
Play slowly & hold down the keys for several seconds for full effect.
Reminiscent of some of the music in the film _Diva_.

Line 1+2' Octave 0
Detune + OCT 1, NOTE 7 FINE 0
Vibrato: Wave 1 Delay 0 Rate 0 Depth 0
Modulation: None

DCO 1 Wave 1 Env 0/0/END
DCW 1 Key 0 Env 53/5 37/0/END
DCA 1 Key 0 Env 38/99 30/0/END

DCO 2 Wave 1 Env 0/0/END
DCW 2 Key 0 Env 32/5 25/0/END
DCA 2 Key 0 Env 32/99 30/0/END

=========
Name: Landing 747
The best sound comes from keys at the low end of the keyboard, I think.
Hold down the key to let the effect complete its cycle.
Holding several adjacent keys works well, too.

Line 1+2' Octave -1
Detune - OCT 1, NOTE 0 FINE 0
Vibrato: Wave 1 Delay 31 Rate 36 Depth 0
Modulation: Noise

DCO 1 Wave 5 Env 99/95 9/43/SUS 8/0/END
DCW 1 Key 0 Env 99/73/SUS 9/62 9/0/END
DCA 1 Key 6 Env 56/88/SUS 10/28 37/0/END

DCO 2 Wave 5 Env 99/80 24/43/SUS 8/0/END
DCW 2 Key 0 Env 99/81/SUS 9/62 9/0/END
DCA 2 Key 2 Env 53/81/SUS 10/37 30/0/END

========
Name: Thompson Bass
Similar to the plucked bass sound used on several Thompson Twins records.
After an initial transient, the note fades to a muted drone.

Line 1+2' Octave -1
Detune - OCT 0, NOTE 0 FINE 0
Vibrato: Wave 1 Delay 0 Rate 0 Depth 0
Modulation: None

DCO 1 Wave 3 Env 0/0/END
DCW 1 Key 9 Env 99/94 55/23/SUS 37/0/END
DCA 1 Key 0 Env 99/99 63/70/SUS 50/0/END

DCO 2 Wave 3 Env 0/0/END
DCW 2 Key 9 Env 99/94 55/23/SUS 37/0/END
DCA 2 Key 0 Env 99/99 63/70/SUS 50/0/END

==========
Happy listening.
