Hello all! This is my first contribution to this group seeing as I have half driven myself half - insane trying to get this thing to work with ableton properly/simply! Some things I mention will be pretty obvious but this is intended for someone who has NEVER used the BCR or any of the other midi tools listed. I will also share some trouble shooting/problems I ran into in the hopes I can spare at least one person the pain this has caused me. My setup: BCR2000 + Win7 + Ableton 9.1 *this is NOT for Mackie control *This template allows blue handling (macro control) for only 8 knobs at a time, just like automap, and has the rest of the knobs mapped to available cc's. Tools: http://mountainutilities.eu/bcmanager - you need this to edit templates http://www.behringerdownload.de/B-Control_download/Update_Utility.zip - this utility flashes the firmware, you may need to use this to bail out a bricked controller. http://www.behringerdownload.de/B-Control_download/bcr2000_1-10.zip - here is the Firmware file you must load into the Update Utility in order to flash it properly. Download my template in the yahoo groups "Bcr_Live_QuickStart_Template" 1. Open BC Manager. It should detect your B control if its on and you installed the drivers. *note: the default windows driver that loadded up for this USB device DOES work, in fact the USB driver on the beheringer site kept crashing my entire system, this may or may not apply to you. If the default driver doesn't work, try the behringer one here: 32 bit: http://www.behringerdownload.de/_software/BEHRINGER_MIDI_WIN32_1.0.10.zip 64 bit: http://www.behringerdownload.de/_software/BEHRINGER_MIDI_X64_1.0.10.zip 2. In the 'B-Controls' Window, File>Open>Bcr_Live_QuickStart_Template 3. In the 'B-Controls' Window, Midi>Send All Data *The lights should spin around on the lcd screen and it will take a little while to transfer everything. *If the upload fails, or continues to fail OR your bcr bricks (becomes un-responsive) use the Update Utility tool listed above and flash the Firmware. 4. Assuming the template upload succeeded, go ahead and close out bcr manager. I recommend to turn off your BCR2000 and turn it back on before you Open Ableton. (sometimes bcrmanager doesnt let go of the midi port which renders your controller undetectable in ableton, reset fixes this.) 4a. Select preset #1 before entering ableton 5. In ableton goto Options>Preferences>Midi Sync Under control surfaces select 'BCR2000', for input and output select 'BCR2000' as well. 6. For BCR2000 Input turn ON 'Track' and 'Remote' - leave sync off 7. For BCR2000 Output turn ON 'Track' and 'Remote' - leave sync off * gotcha: the bcr will work w/o remote on however if you want the lights to follow the changes on screen AND vice a versa (on screen controls change lights on hardware), then you must have remote enabled for both input and output, incidentally this is why I made all the buttons into NOTE values instead of Control Changes, The buttons acting as cc's combined with REMOTE on really started making stuff go crazy - in a bad way) 8. If you followed the instructions and everything is set correctly....You should be able to select a device and the 'blue hand' should appear above it, and you should have control of the first 8 parameters. I highly recommend taking devices and right clicking them and grouping them. This adds a macro control which you can then bind with the 8 most useful parameters. Once you click on the macro the blue hand should also appear. Final notes/ thoughts: The template currently only has presets 1-5. each preset number corresponds to the midi channel that all the cc's are mapped to. Example Preset 2: all cc's are sending on channel 2. You can copy/paste a preset and just change the channels to add more. (a bit tedious but works, I only needed 5, so I stopped at 5) CC's 1-8 are the blue handling cc numbers. So if you want to move the knobs from where I have them currently, edit the template in BCR Manager and move cc1-8 to the desired positions. *The buttons stay on the same channel and setting for every preset. I use these to mute and solo group busses like Drums, Bass, Synth so they stay the same accross presets. You could change their channels if you want unique buttons for each preset. *the top knobs on Preset 1, auto map to the first 8 FADERS in ableton, be aware of this when laying out tracks. I suggest making busses, and sending everything to the appropriate bus. Exp. Track 1 - drums, Track 2 - Perc, Track 3 Bass, Then 'send' all the audio from the given tracks INTO these busses. This will keep your binding consistent and the knobs will always affect those specific channels. Feedback is welcome as I want this to be as clear as possible without leaving too many gotcha's unmentioned. Good luck! MAKE MUSIC! Trev
