I found another hint: an old Valvo opto book states that IR-LEDs
have the junction on the bottom of the chip, the p-implant is rather
thick. This is possible because Si is transparent for IR radiation.
Not so for visible light, there we have a very thin p-implant on
top of the chip, so that the light has only to travel trough this
thin layer.
This says basically that visible light LED are surface devices,
whereas IR LEDs are burried, the later can dissipate more heat,
thus higher currents.
Sounds reasonable to me.
