Hi Darren,
Sure go ahead.
_If_ you need the shielding metal gives you,
just stick some self-adhesive copper foil to the back of your panel.
(Copper seems to work better than Alu foil, scale modeling shops sell this)
Or use a mettal false front and mount the wood pannel in front of this.
This false front could be alu., steel, copper (pcb) or what ever.
One of the nice things of using a false front anyway is you have the nuts
of you pot meters and switches behind your front panel.
Only the spindles stick through the wooden front.
The other is you can use a U or L shaped false front to mount you pcb 90
degrees behind your front panel.
