[sdiy] More about standards, levels on ins, or outs?

Arrrrgh,

I'm pulling hairs out here.  I'm looking for the voice
of experience on this one.  Where's the best place for
CV level controls, input, output, both,
neither(external)?

I realize that each situation might have advantages
and disadvantages but what I'm after is something of a
systems standard to apply to myself as I build
modules. Personally, I tend towards a more granular
approach as opposed to an integrated one, however, too
granular leads to excessive work to accomplish a task.
So I'm looking for a good approach that has some
thought behind the ideas.

If you have a strong opinion, could you share why you
feel the way you do.
