I agree that the TL0xx series are worthy candidates for replacement.  The 
only caveat I can think of, aside from considering input voltage 
limitations and the presence of phase reversal when those limits are 
exceeded, is that the 741 of course is a BJT-input stage opamp, whereas the 
TL0xx opamps have FET input stages.  I'm not sure in which cases this would 
be a bad thing, of course, but I thought I'd point it out for benefit of 
the archives and let people correct me for personal benefit. ;)

Other good part to look at would be the LM1458, which is BJT-input like the 
741, but with lower noise, input voltage offset, and higher slew 
rate.  Problem is this is a dual opamp: is there a single equivalent that's 
pin-compatible with the 741?  I've never looked.
