The problem has been solved All 2N4853s are not equal.
I popped one in a real VCO and guess what... That's right
It would not scale. So I did a some quick stuff.... and now
they do...;-)
Here's something to go by......

This adds a dual opamp and a few more components
so the small-kit would be $4.00.. But we can still do
it and yes I'll toss a few more 100K resistors in there
for CV summing...even though I didn't draw any..;-)
The really good news is that I've got 50 2N2647s
that will work in the new circuit...so there are now
more available.....
