How about starting with a bank of voltage comparators, such as LM339. Each
voltage comparator could have it's own level pot.
Hmmm! How about a pot at the comparator input to set the trigger level and
another pot to set the output level. Let's see 64 notes, 128 pots. Cool!
Okay start out with a 16 step version.
Real synthesizers have lots of knobs.
