Well now, this gets to the basic question: Why do
synth at all?
Okay, so there are at least four camps. One camp loves
synths for the 'synth sound'. The very worst of this
had to have been the 'disco synth drums'. Anybody
cringing out there?
The second camp seeks to want to duplicate real sounds
with the synth. This begs for questions like Matti's:
Why bother? Wanna drum? Buy a drum. One obvious answer
is: Hey, I can't play a drum; I'm a keyboardist, so I
synth the drums I need and play 'em on my keyboard.
Lets see: Camp #3: the DIYers. They do shit cause its
cool and neat and groovy and distracts them from
having to think about their pending divorce.
Then there is camp #4: The folks who want to make all
new, yet naturally sounding, synth sounds. This is the
camp I belong in. I want to play a drum consisting of
woven butterfly wings stretched over a Saturn V
booster hull. This will probably not happen real life.
But I bet I can synth it! But first I need to grok
drums in fullness. So I will try to make the most
realistic sounding Doumbek (or whatever) I can. When I
have achieved Oneness with the drum, i can then embark
on a journey of newness.
Besides, its fun!
