in my opinion the 909 is by far the best one Roland did. The 808 has 
more bottom end, but it doesn't have the attack noise that makes it work 
like a real drum would in the mix. The 606 is really tinie, as is the 
CR-8000 or other twin-T types. I think they are funny at best I have a 
606 that I did the mods from keyboards magazine on. the bass is huge, 
but the drum is very inconsistant. one trigger to the next varies way 
too much in my opinion.
 The 909 can be tuned really low and long, and be tuned up high for a 
better thump in the mix. I think it is the ultimate analog kick drum 
solution. If you compress it and bring out the attack even more, it's a 
monster. Maybe you can work with the 909 design a little to make the 
volume envelope sweep more, increasing the attack. Or, maybe make a real 
envelope there insted of the mini one it has. Then you can tweak the 
volume shape to perfection.
