Mine does the same thing...if you program a lot of bass drum notes near each
other, some of the notes are a lot quieter than others.  It's almost like
having a compressor with a really long attack time, which kicks in and sucks
some of the notes away.

Turn the attack way up (so you can see the spikes on the retriggers), then
record a little of this phenomena into a computer, and look at the
wave...I'd always just assumed it was like you mention, with the retridder
out of phase with the decaying note...report back if you try this!
