Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of it yet, but I just did the first
field test last night of my latest music contraption. Four MFM hard drives
with covers and positioning steppers removed, driven by a PC power supply and
played with screwdrivers, sheet metal and power tools, then amplified. It's
possible to change the pitch of platters by denting and otherwise abusing
them. The only issue is the inability to really abuse the spinning platters
without decoupling the motor shaft from the magnetic field in the motor, thus
stopping the motor and forcing it to restart.
I used this in a performance last night in boston with satisfactory results.
There will probably be a forthcoming video release of this performance cut
from footage taken by a few people present. I hope to release it on video CD,
for anybody who wants to watch me in action abusing the audience/burning
myself with fireworks-DIY and making creative use of large kitchen appliances
and flammable liquids along with the rest of the band.
