[sdiy] "Reports of DIY's death are greatly exaggerated"

Bah! Solder is for weenies! Real Men (tm) use arc-welders. <grin>

A side question: what is DIY in people's minds? How much of "it" must you do for it to be done by you? And how much wood can a... oh, nevermind. Myself, I wouldn't consider MOTM kits to be DIY, but they approach it. Partial Blacet kits edge closer... something like Oakley would be.

At any rate, I don't think that DIY is completely dead. Sure, manufactured stuff is far more prominent, and consumerism, video games, microwaves, and general instant-gratification culture will further that end. But there's a small breed of folk who want something a little more intimate, be it setting up their own home network, tweaking their car / motorcycle, or rolling their own synths and effects. Unfortunately, I do think that the growth of digital consumer technology will effectively kill off the Mr. Fixit mentality. For me, the DIY attraction probably stems from my dad-- fixed our cars, put an extension on the house (with help...), and bought "the family" (heh, right.) a TI computer and a subscription to Family Computing (ah, hand-copying those programs!). And the buckets of Legos didn't hurt either.

I don't understand the massive attraction to Nintendo. I mean, how the hell does one type in "whack the troll with the mace" on one of those little controllers...? Being all of 26, I guess that makes me a cranky young fart. :)

My favorite programming language is solder.
