I understand that aircraft use equipment designed to operate from something
like 400 Hz AC power. This requires much smaller filter capacitors and much
smaller transformers. On an aircraft, this saves a lot of weight, which is
probably the main reason it is done.

With Toby's comment in mind, I vote for 440 Hz. Making it three phase would
also be interesting. You can get full wave rectification from three phase,
without the voltage ever going to zero. I think if you add even more phases,
the voltage would be even more uniform--of course I'm referring to the
rectifier output, before any filtering.
