There where many multiplier chips back in the days that did
multiplications, and sometimes even addition in one cycle. I grew up in a
time where they where the way of implementing things and DSPs where few.
I still have datasheets around for them and I have a 16 bit 65 ns
multiplier chip lying around somewhere (got it of the top of a
dessert!!!). TRW and Analog Devices are among the manufactures I recall
being in that game.
What happend to TRWs semiconductor division BTW? Anyone know? They had
crazy stuff like videochips that scaled, turned and mirrored TV-pictures
at your own desire. Took some figuring to understand but...
