   You can still do this with metal film.  They are fairly sensitive, so 
you have to go real light with the file.  Even then the value can change 
pretty quickly!
   Mostly you can get around the problem of range values by using more 
than one resistor in series and/or parallel.  One of my current projects 
includes building a massive vocoder bank and you can't believe the 
combinations of resistors/caps I calculated out to minimize the number of 
unique parts!  It was very mind numbing.
   And no, I do _NOT_ plan to file any 0603s!  ;)
