[sdiy] How accurate?

"My point was not really to do with pricing of DACs, accuracy etc....and
ultimately, there is no 'correct' way to do anything."

-->The last point made, about no "correct" way is what makes Synth-DIY
great. With DIY synthesizer technology everything is right, even if it
results in a war story about the day my synth burned the house down.

-->Now manufacturers can't even hope to exploit this characteristic. If
your income depends upon units out the door you have to access liability,
follow fashion (which extends to color, shape, current pseudo-techno
specification), and all the other things you read about in mag's and on
Analogue Heaven.

--->I think back to Plutonique's Vactrol attack on some Radio Shack delay
line. Nothing "correct" about that but damn interesting as it was being
evaluated as a device which contributed to making music. And music it made.

--->So i have betrayed my "prejudice" i "personally" need it to add up
making music. I have always been interested in the large numbers of synth
DIY'ers who "can't play a note". While not understanding this long standing
phenomena exactly i have noticed that this contingent produces some mighty
interesting stuff. And then we make music with it.

--->Since there is no "correct" way of doing things there still remains
phenomena which is observably repeatable and attributable to certain
characteristics. IF you want a DAC which will exhibit less than 1 cent of
inaccuracy you have some work to do. It is do-able and in more than 1 way.

--->In the converter thread it was easy to predict that certain techniques
and characteristics could result in a predictable state (i.e. tuning only
accurate to 3-6 cents or drift, or what have you) however in classic DIY
style a lot of comments indicated satisfactory results using different
techniques and also a consideration of companion parameters (stability,
repeatability, etc). So i will shut up about DACs for awhile unless someone
wants to contact me directly as i have been doing this for years and am
about to implement some neat things in the coming year which exploit the
readily available, inexpensive, accurate DACs now available.

regards,
p
