It is fairly difficult to do intricate work through welding goggles. I
recommend an LCD facemask. It's a welding mask with an LCD screen that
you look through and a photodiode or something that triggers circuitry
to blank the display when it sees light. So the facemask is clear
except for when you're actually running an arc.

Doing intricate work would be very difficult with a gas welder, I
think. unless you had some very specialized tips to narrow the flame
down.
