Actually... the more resistors you put in series, or parallel...
increases the statistical
probability that you will be near the correct value.  Peter is
correct... if all the
resistors are low.. or high... you could be off by a greater amount.

But with two resistors... there are two chances to win (high-low and
low-high)
that would usually be closer than the tolerance... and two to lose.

Of course... most resistors tend to be in the middle of a group...so the
real word case might be even better.

Add more resistors and your chances improve. Wish the lottery was this
good...
