What platform?  Under Windoze, AFAIK there's no way for the app to know whether it's running status or not.  The OS parses the midi stream and passes its own version of each message to the app.  So you wind up with all sorts of fun, such as SoundBastard interfaces that occasionally drop F7s (End of Sysex), which the OS interprets as a bad SysEx message to be ignored, so the app never sees a damn thing.  

It can get pretty irritating trying to find a good midi monitor.  I usually use the one in my E!'d DX7II, but the other day I found out it doesn't display FAs (Start).  Guess which message I was looking for?  It's almost enough to make me set up my old Mac IIcx...
