Not so. In the TR-606 in which I replaced a CPU once, 
the old CPU had kind of developed a strange fault mode 
where it was just outputting cyclic rubbish on the IO 
lines, resulting in lots of flashing LEDs and random 
drums being triggered. This was not down to the PSU or 
anything external to it. A new CPU cured it.

However, the memory ICs are the post popular parts for 
dying..
