If you sent the CV as an FM signal... the losses would be quite managable...
if you had enough info to at least reconstruct the polatiry of the input signal
it would not matter if there was 'loss' and the frequency could go down to (the
equivalent of) DC.
Audio wise it would sound like pure sh!t... but such a scheme would not need
high fidelity. You could optimize the system by sending a sine wave in (no input
filters needed) and the maximum amplitude (no compandor needed)...
geez if memory chips and A/D D/A converters were not so dirt cheap today...
I'd say 'go for it' :^P
I considered using a BBD for an envelope follower idea, before I decided on the
scheme
that I published in EDN 'design ideas'. A tapped BBD could have been used in a
similar
(but not identical) scheme. One such idea appeared in Electronotes (number i
have no idea...why not re-read all 50 lbs of them tonight :^)
(ps I have embraced the dark side and actually have 10 BBD chips in my possession
