I think you COULD do it with discrete parts... but it would be very
impractical... and might not work much better than the IC version.

OTOH, you could use analog switches that would allow positive and
negative signals to be processed.

This would be my first SMT project ( lol - meaning I would not try it
with through-hole parts)  I would also be REAL sorry when I got
the credit card bill....
