In practice, I can't imagine one would be using ALL the VCAs simultaneously.
In which case, you could have a switching arrangement assigning VCAs,
which should be cheaper, even at the cost of greater complexity.
In any case, I would be thinking vactrols, because
1. the noise isn't bad,
2. low complexity
3. easily drive digitally, the CDS element smooths out the ultrasonic
PWM control signals sent to the diodes.
4. and audio crosspoint switches to do the assigning.
