I do find it interesting that the only company I know of still making BBDs
in the US also makes high-end CCD's for military and aerospace use...

It *is* possible to use fax machine CCD strips to make a BBD if anyone is
bored.  You have to find one without an automatic shutter.  I think I
mentioned this on-list a few years ago.  You ignore the shutter trigger,
cover the whole thing with tape, and use an LED to input your signal at the
far end.  Best I found was 2550 cells and I probably slapped the LED over 20
or 30 of'em.  One nifty thing is you could easily add multiple inputs for
extra noise just by putting more LEDs on it.
