recently i encountered a case where a second-hand 259e was installed in an old 200 cabinet. apprently this particular cabinet was of a small and early generation that had +24v supplied to one of the rails used for digital clock and data in the 200e series. (i think this was for the incandescent lamps in the original 227.) these pins go pretty much straight to the brain of 200e modules, with little or no protection from overvoltage, so the result in this case was instant tragic death for the 259e. obviously this is a big hole in our claim that "form factors and power supplies are identical" between vintage 200 and 200e. sorry. anyway... watch out... if you're going to install 200e modules in an old cabinet, check the power supply voltages first, and BLOCK THOSE PINS if necessary. i'm attaching a drawing of the supply voltages for 200e. blocking the clock/data lines shouldn't affect the module's functionality except when inter-module communication is involved (midi and preset management). -eb [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
