I don't think they're for any one thing in particular but four things heard is quad phonic! ;-] It's just individual outputs vs mono summed output. Like how a mixing desk often has individual outs as well as summed (though they call it master bus for good reasons). A common practice is chaining channels to get dynamics and a filter with separate modulation control for each.
