It's not just a matter of changing out jacks. The mini jacks are  
mounted to a circuit board (along with the pots & LEDs, and  
occasionally LCDs), but the banana jacks are deeper than that, so they  
poke through holes in the circuit board. If bananas were going to be  
used instead, it would mean replacing pots with pots that had longer  
shafts, replacing LEDs so that they were long enough to poke through,  
finding a new way to mount the LCDs, in short, a nightmare.
