Re: Speakers for 200e ?

2013-03-02 by j_inform3r

Hi,

I've been in a similar situation. Since space was a big concern for me, I decided that looking at typical powered studio monitors just wasn't going to work. As an alternative I decided to check out what the PC/multimedia world had to offer.

I live near an Apple store so I took an afternoon to check out the various makes and models on display. Since lugging my Buchla down to the store seemed like it might not be such a good idea, I settled for the iPods that they had hooked up to each set of speakers as my sound source.

I eventually decided on purchasing a pair of Bose Computer MusicMonitor for $269. They are an *excellent* fit with the Buchla! They have a very small footprint and pack quite a punch (they can get LOUD). The sound is fantastic, nice smooth highs and surprisingly thick and *detailed lows*. During my comparisons in the store, the main difference that started to become apparent between the lower priced vs. higher priced speakers was how well they handled lower frequencies. The cheaper models got *very* muddy sounding in the low end and lost all detail, especially when the volume was raised higher than "normal" listening level. Whereas the higher priced models kept the bass completely intact. They also had a certain clarity or definition (overall) that the cheaper models lacked.

So, anyone out there looking for dedicated speakers for their Buchla... There is an alternative to the studio monitors that most of us are accustomed to. You might want to explore the option of multimedia/PC speakers before making any final decisions.

Regards,
John
