Ben,
Six modules: Quad Function Generator
                     Quad Dynamics Manager
Arbitrary Function Generator (double module space)
                     Twisted Waveform Generator
                     Source of Uncertainty
Check the above modules out. I think this is a good starter system. Also, give Don a call. He usually answers the phone.
                                                                          Have Fun!
                                                                          Arthur http://thissecondsleep.blogspot.com/

thanks for that arthur

what do you think about using the 251 instead of the 250? it uses up a bit less space, but can it do the same sort of things?

also, what i was really asking was are there any users here in london who i could get in touch with?

Ben,
The coolest thing about the 251e is that it can play four different sequences at the same time and at different speeds if you like. I'm not an expert on either, but if you go to Muffwiggler (in the Buchla, Serge, EMS section) you'll be able to ask more questions. You can also ask about Buchla users in London at Muffwiggler. Have fun! Using a Buchla is quite an adventure. Best Regards, Arthur

Benge,
I didn't realize it was you. You know my brother John (ether^ra). We're both great admirers of your work and your blog. Please join my blog if you get the chance. Thanks. And please let me know how your Buchla search goes.

Benge,
You may want to check with Rick Price in Canada concerning both 200e and vintage 200 modules. He's knows his stuff. His email is echo7even@yahoo.com

Re: call from london 250e vs 251e

2011-08-11 by nicholas_kent

Regarding the comparison. Clearly they are aimed at different sequencing approaches and tasks so they don't directly compare feature for feature as say the discontinued 249e and 250e might be able to.

As mentioned the 251e has several much longer independent sequences that you can clock, loop, edit reset, etc. in a compact format. So it's 4 long chains with tools to clock in relation or not.

While the 250e has lots of knobby user interface to manipulate several locked together 16 step channels in a large number of fairly interactive ways. Step length can be controlled and there are many conditional options.

I'm sure it's a call as to what suits you, differences are enough that I'd want to get both eventually. Right now I have the 250e. I found it not intuitive but once I spent some time it made sense ( and i really appreciate it being in a system with patch storage). My general opinion of the older 249e was you had two 24 step sequences that are separate with less of a user interface. It was more of a program it in sort of thing than a start it up and tweak while running. Not that you couldn't but I felt you needed more of a plan to use it.

hey thanks arthur. i will join your blog group...

yes, i know rick already [hi there mr. smith!]

thanks for the info nicholas. it seems the 251 is a bit hard to read in real time - how do you know the cv setting for each output step?

Benge,
Many thanks... I'd appreciate it. Yes, Rick Smith the guy. I had a senior moment... sorry. On the 251e you can press the display/edit button and you'll see the voltages for each stage in the Stage Edit section. Best Regards, Arthur

I agree about the 249e. If you knew what you wanted when you started out, the 249e was good, but if you were improvising, or just goofing off, the 249e was not as fun as a "normal" step sequencer.
