QUESTIONS

2006-04-16 by cuari7

Hi, guys! Happy Easter.
Got some questions for ya:

Anybody own a 256e? I'm interested in it, but I need to know if it's
possible to do fine scaling with it (are the knobs stepped like in the
291e or the 210e?)). If it's got stepped increments/decrements, then
it would have very limited usefulness in a voltage-controlled modular
system.

Anybody have the latest firmware update? Is pitch-bending already
possible? I ordered the "kit" 2 months ago but I have yet to get it...

What is the "kit" you ordered?

I assume he's referring to the USB firmware updater that Buchla is
offering. It allows you to download new firmware revs from a Buchla
website to a PC, and update modules' firmware via USB.

I see no mention of this on the Buchla website. Can someone please
point me to information regarding this?

Is this for people who do not own a 225e?

I don't think there's any written info at this point. You'd have to call
B&A for more info.

I'm wondering about this myself. I do not own a 225e, but I have a
feeling my 259e needs updating (the morph and warp controls have very
distinct stepping at 10 and 2 o'clock).

Looks like pitchbend is in the new version

Re: QUESTIONS

I still haven't gotten my answer:

Is the 256e capable of doing fine tuning/scaling or is it stepped like
the 210e?

Please let me know.

Hi cuari7.
No, the 256e is not stepped so YES, you can do fine scaling.

Re: QUESTIONS

2006-04-25 by wiardmodular

I just got my 256e yesterday. After spending some time with it it
is clear that it IS stepped.

The knobs being stepped is ok with me. Digital pots I'd expect to
have stepping. Unfortunately the processing it does on a cv also
exhibits stepping.

I tried patching a serge LFO (dual universal slope generator as lfo)
into the 256e with the in side set to 0 volts and the out to 2
volts. I then took the output and ran it to a serge precision
vco. It audibly showed stepping as the lfo ran from 0 to 10 volts
getting squashed to 0 to 2 volts by the 256e. When I set the out
stage to 8 volts the stepping became less noticeable but was still
audible.

I posted an mp3 file of this patch to the group. About half way
through you can hear me shift the output on the 256e from 2 volt out
to 8 volt out with the result of reduced size of the stepping.

Maybe a future firmware update will provide higher resolution?

Chris

Re: QUESTIONS

I should add

the stepping of the 256e is MUCH finer than that of the 210e and one
is able to easily do stuff like rescale a 1v/oct keyboard to the
buchla's standard.

This is the main reason I'm getting it anyway. Mine will probably come
in by tomorrow.........

Have you contacted Buchla about this? I don't have a 256e yet but I'd
not expect to hear any stepping/quantization happening at all.

Yes, as a matter of fact I did (just yesterday, no less!).

He informed me that yes, there is some stepping, but that the
resolution was high enough to allow for "fine" scaling, much better
than the 210e.

I guess I'll know for sure when I get it.
