Someone mentioned using the 255 as a simple envelope generator by
using a pulse as input and controllong the envelope shape with the lag
controls.
I was just wondering, how does it actually respond if the rise lag
is used in this case? I am thinking it would die off pretty soon unless
it is some kind of "free run" lag.

Yep, it's mainly a transient thing. But I still contend that the 255 
is one of the best new modules to come out of the new batch of stuff. 
You need something to attenuate or slew-ify voltage, especially if 
you're dealing with a lowpass gate or envelope step.
