256e question (and fs)

2008-02-07 by jon schatz

can someone explain what setting a breakpoint is doing on a 256e? the
linear transformation part is intuitive, but i don't quite understand
what setting the breakpoint values is accomplishing.

also, i have an extra 256e for sale. email me off-list if you're
interested.

thanks,

-jon

A break point just lets you add another input-level to output-level
transform.

On one section of the 256, set the input and output knobs to 0, and
add a breakpoint, and set the breakpoint in value about mid way, and
its out value to full. Note that if you connected the three points in
the display it would sort of resemble a triangle wave.

Now, if you feed this a sawtooth from a function generator set to
recycle with 0 attack and a longish decay, the 256 will output a
triangle. This same setup will also frequency double a triangle wave
input.

This is pretty useful for adding a kink in what would otherwise be a
smooth ramp.
