201e-12 questions

2008-02-21 by jon schatz

1) are the shipping cases a standard part somewhere or are they custom
made for b+a? put another way, do i need to order one directly from
buchla or is there a part number somewhere?

2) ditto for the led lamp. i have an older 12u case which has one
round and two rectangular holes in the upwards facing side of the top
boat. they look like good places to mount a lamp (or lamps), is that
their purpose? has anyone retrofit an older case with a lamp?

thanks,

-jon

ps - i love this instrument!

hi jon

1) the cases are made by parker, but we get an excellent deal on them and
spend some effort installing foam blocks of the appropriate size and
density.

2) the holes in your cabinet will fit the lamps, which are a mechanically
trivial installion but require some minimal soldering to connect them to the
power supply board.

helps?

glad to hear about your continued enjoyment. share some sounds!

so it sounds like i should order this from you directly then.

is this something i can order? i seem to remember it being an option
at one point but it's not on the price list now.

as soon as i figure out a good way of capturing this quad sound
madness that allows sharing without a dvd i'll be glad to. i've had so
much fun just sequencing separate outputs of a drum machine around the
room, sending reverb in the opposite direction, using a eg (er, fg) to
pan a 259e sound from back to front and then left to right, etc. i
totally get why one of the other folks i know with a 200e owns his own
4 channel sound system.

thanks,

Be sure to let us know what you come up with.

I'll wager we're all in the same boat, trying to figure a good way to
distribute the swirly good stuff.

i tried exporting to binaural wav and 4 channel wav and the only thing
that would read said files was the program that exported them. so i
just merged the front and back stereo channels together in live which
i'm sure is causing some weird phase cancellation issues. this isn't
edited or processed or really even well thought out but it should give
you an idea of what someone with one week of experience on one of
these machines can come up with.

btw, playing with white noise in 4 channels is pretty neat. i kept
thinking my mixer channel wasn't outputting anything as running 266e
noise -> 291e -> 227e was doing a convincing replication of either 1)
rush hour traffic outside, 2) my heater turning on, or 3) rain coming
down.

Thanks - some interesting sounds there.

I've tried several different binaural encoders, on Mac and Windows,
and haven't found any that can reproduce the motion and directionality
of my true quad recordings. Unless you release in surround, I'm coming
to think that the only way to properly release quad recordings as
stereo tracks is by re-recording with a binaural head, as I mentioned.
I haven't gotten around to renting one yet, but I will.

In the meantime, how about if you upload some of your original four-
track files, either as four mono files or in some four-track format,
for those who can play it back in quad? I will if you will. ^_^
