50g

You press left arrow and pie, just below the 3 and it shows pie in the display and not the number.  So, then it doesn't calculate with pie, it just shows it in the display tacked onto the other number with a times sign.  How do I get it to show the number and calculate with the number?

type all your calculations and then use ->num to get the numerical value
(right shift + enter)

If you are in approx mode you can press eval as well (change between exact
and numerical mode by holding right shift and pressing enter)

Set flag 2 on.
{Mode; flags; down arrow; then set flag on}

Thanks.  That works but I still don't think that's right.  I shouldn't have to press left arrow + pie and then convert it to a number.  Fortunately I can using right arrow + num without it screwing up the calculation I have going, but there is something wrong with that.

Setting flag -2 is a good idea if you don't use CAS or use it once in a while, otherwise you are going to find yourself constantly changing the setting when a CAS command requires it.

It works fine for me.  I use RPN whenever possible.  I don't want CAS on the calculator at all.  I constantly have to remember which commands only use CAS.

Do not confuse Reverse Polish Notation (RPN) and Algebraic modes of
entry and notation with the Computer Algebra System (CAS) that
facilitates symbolic mathematics.  Although I would not miss algebraic
entry mode if it were not present on my 49g/49g+/50g, their utility
would definitely be crippled without a CAS.

Anyone who knows better or can state this more clearly is welcome to
step in and correct, expound on, and/or clarify what I'm trying to say
here.  There are many much more expert on this topic than myself.

I think he meant ALG instead of CAS.  Their are commands that simply don't work without using ALG mode to do them.  This is probably because the command sequence was not written in any of the many manuals HP put out.  You know the ones, that were translated from one language to the next so that they would fit inside a certain number of pages, thus saving HP the frustrating need to sell RPN calculators to actual mathematicians.  I don't think the confusion regarding CAS and ALG stem from not knowing the difference between the two, its more then likely because the Mode button is quite close to the same thing as entering into a calculator mode changing step, like you have to do in CAS.
