RE: [68300] Motorola Future

2003-10-06 by Melear Charles-rdph40

Hello everyone,

As a personal note, I cannot comment at all on the Motorola decision to spin off its semiconductor group. Literally, all I know is what I read in the papers. Also, my illustratious employer has shaken its long finger at all of us and said that we MUST NOT comment on these business issues. (The SEC gets real down on this type of thing.)

So much for the personal note.

Now for business: Remko, you might really want to think about the MPC555 board. Now before I go any further, there are several 68300 products that will have an extended life time. They are the 68331, 68332, 68336 and 68376. There may be a few more but those are the biggies right now.

However, all of these products are limited to 25 MHz. So, if you are performance bound in your application by the 25 MHz clock, thangs ain't going to get no better. So, the MPC500 family may be a very good choice for you. The MPC500 is a growing family. The 68300 family will almost certainly get no new derivatives or speed upgrades in the future.

Now, I am very partial to the 68300 family because I have worked on it for so long. There is probably (as far as I can see) no problem with availability for the next several years on the existing 68300 products. However, you certainly need to get a quote from you distributor on a specific product.

With regard to the MPC500 family, there will be new derivatives. Some of these that have smaller flash memories can be very cost effective. Anyway, a lot of your decision upon on what to use here is based on whether this thing you want to build is going to be one of a kind ORRRRRRRRRR will you need an upgrade path to faster, more complex parts.

Let me know if I can stir this pot any more.

Regards,

Charlie

I just got the news today on Motorola. I have no idea what to expect but
to my opinion Motorola has been great informing customers about their
products (manuals, application notes, etc..). For me one of their strong
points. Not all companies have their paperwork as nice and tidy so I do
hope in the future this will remain the same.

P.S. Charles:

My 68376 project is on a halt due to school projects with the hc12
(shouldn't even be here :) and saw a mpc555 board for halve the price as
the 376 board that I was planning to buy.

    Hi Charles.

I saw that Motorola stock is jumping 2 points since last month, with
the
new CEO. I also see it jumped the last of those 2 points as a result
of
    spinning off its semiconductor division.

What does that mean for all the motorola CPUs? Will it still be
    Motorola, or what?
