maybe is just me .. but i get more and more pleasure with real time 
synths,  simply laid out panels and immidiate tweaking

or a waldorf pulse with some knobby box 
can make miracles 
u can chain them also if u want polyphony 

i also love the doepfer ms404 if u can find one 

all mono analogue ..depends also what kind of sonority 
u are after 

also cheap nowdays are jd990/k2000/Ws/UWave/TG77/Sy99
